When a vessel is unearthed from a woodfire kiln, it is covered in ashes and sometimes studded with shards. The pieces that endure this transformative story involving flame, wood, earth, often emerge with scars that give us a glimpse into the journey. This piece came out with a pottery shard fused to its handle, and with delicate grinding work, I was able to smooth it and love it all the more. Note the different colors that grace the sides of the mug, from a raw grey and yellow to a bright orange shiny glow. A sculpted handle and the hourglass curve of the body give this mug the grace and courage to wear its scar proudly.
